'KPop Demon Hunters' Is Getting a Cinephile-Approved Blu-ray and DVD Release From Criterion
KPop Demon Hunters is set to make its physical debut. The acclaimed animated feature, which achieved significant popularity on Netflix, is now available for preorder in Blu-ray and DVD formats via the Criterion Collection. The current release date is indicated as December 31, 2026. However, as Amazon often uses the year's beginning and end as placeholder dates, it is likely that the actual release may occur prior to this date.
The confirmation of a Criterion release for KPop Demon Hunters was announced in February, alongside Netflix's Frankenstein. This decision marks a notable shift for Netflix, which has historically emphasized streaming services over conventional theatrical and home-release practices. While physical releases of Netflix films are uncommon, notable exceptions include acclaimed titles such as Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma," Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," and Jane Campion's "The Power of the Dog," all of which have garnered Criterion releases.
Pricing and Formats
The pricing structure lists the DVD at $30, the Blu-ray at $40, and the 4K version at $50.
Why This Release Matters
KPop Demon Hunters achieved the distinction of being Netflix's most-watched original title to date, complemented by a limited theatrical release. Its inclusion in Criterion’s collection is somewhat unexpected, as the organization typically focuses on independent and arthouse films rather than box-office hits, with a relatively minimal selection of animated features in its catalog.
The preorder listing also presents provisional cover art; Criterion is celebrated for its distinctive artwork accompanying releases, enhancing their collectibility. Anticipated extras may include deleted scenes and interviews, although further specifics have yet to be disclosed. In addition to reissuing celebrated films, Criterion is known for its video and audio restoration and remastering to ensure the highest quality.
The Film's Musical Success
A key factor in KPop Demon Hunters' widespread acclaim was its music, particularly the track "Golden," which dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and won the Oscar for Best Original Song. The film's soundtrack was subsequently released on both CD and vinyl.
Songwriter Mark Sonnenblick remarked on the songs' ability to resonate independently from the film, stating: "You go and watch the movie, and 'Golden' is this kind of misguided thing that they have in the beginning so that they can break open and find their real voice at the end. But you'd never know that from listening to this on its own."
Other Upcoming Criterion Releases
Criterion has additional releases on the horizon, including Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident, David Lynch's Elephant Man, and John Waters' Hairspray.
