Ashlee Simpson and 3OH!3 Bring Y2K Nostalgia to Stagecoach's Emo Nite
The popular DJ-driven roving dance party Emo Nite made its mark at Stagecoach on Friday, taking over Diplo's Honky Tonk with a high-energy set featuring Ashlee Simpson and electropop duo 3OH!3. The event delivered a powerful dose of early 2000s nostalgia that resonated with festival attendees.
Emo Nite co-founders Morgan Reed and T.J. Petracca launched the performance with Fall Out Boy's iconic "Sugar We're Going Down," establishing the evening's alternative rock foundation. The set continued with expertly crafted remixes spanning the emo and alternative spectrum, featuring tracks from Panic! At the Disco, All-American Rejects, Paramore, and My Chemical Romance. The musical journey also incorporated broader early 2000s anthems, including The Killers' "Mr. Brightside" and Blink-182's "All the Small Things," alongside Justin Bieber's "Baby" to round out the millennial favorites.
The nostalgic atmosphere intensified when 3OH!3 took the stage, with the Colorado-based duo embracing the festival's Western theme by dressing as Woody from Toy Story. Their performance of fan favorites like "My First Kiss" energized the crowd, while their controversial yet undeniably catchy breakout single "Don't Trust Me" had the entire tent-covered audience bouncing in their cowboy boots and enthusiastically singing the memorable lyrics.
The evening reached its crescendo with Ashlee Simpson's appearance, the singer making a striking entrance in a fringed leather jacket to perform "La La" from her 2004 debut album Autobiography. The crowd's enthusiastic response highlighted the enduring appeal of Simpson's early work, particularly significant given her limited public performances in recent years. Her last studio album, Bittersweet World, was released in 2008, making this appearance a notable return to the festival circuit.
Simpson's recent activities have generated renewed interest in her musical career. She completed a brief Las Vegas residency at Voltaire in the Venetian Resort and achieved a career milestone by winning the 14th season of The Masked Singer in March. In a recent Billboard interview, Simpson expressed optimism about her musical future, stating there is "definitely new music on the horizon" and confirming her readiness to "release new music" while describing herself as "inspired."
The Emo Nite event at Stagecoach successfully bridged the gap between alternative rock nostalgia and country festival culture, demonstrating the universal appeal of early 2000s music and its ability to unite diverse audiences in celebration of shared cultural memories.
