KISS Academy remains an unforgettable backdrop as the Netflix original series XO, Kitty returns for its third season on April 2. This season, characters begin to ponder life beyond their glamorous high school experience. In advance of the premiere, Rolling Stone provides an exclusive first look at the soundtrack that will accompany the dynamic episodes.
“This show strikes a healthy balance of fun, drama, and emotion,” stated co-music supervisor Lindsay Wolfington. “This includes everything from falling in love and experiencing heartbreak to building friendships and enjoying dance parties—all the joyous activities characteristic of youth.”
XO, Kitty marks the inaugural spin-off in author Jenny Han’s adaptation series, which began with the film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and centers on the storyline of Lara Jean Song-Covey (played by Lana Condor). The franchise has since broadened to include the successful TV series The Summer I Turned Pretty and its eagerly awaited film conclusion. Set in Seoul, Korea, XO Kitty follows Lara Jean’s younger sister, Kitty Song-Covey (played by Anna Cathcart), as she makes the transition from the United States to attend the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS).
In earlier seasons of XO, Kitty, audiences witnessed the protagonist’s evolution from an awkward American navigating the challenges of her environment to a KISS student who cultivates meaningful friendships while uncovering details about her estranged mother. However, even though Kitty has found her footing, she still faces numerous challenges.
Wolfington collaborates with Laura Webb to curate the series' musical identity, infusing the signature energy from the To All the Boys films with a contemporary K-pop influence. This duo has also contributed to the soundtracks of all three original films: To All the Boys (2018), P.S. I Still Love You (2020), and Always and Forever (2021). They explained to Rolling Stone that their shared history enriches their ability to connect with the narrative's emotional core, ensuring continuity throughout Han’s work.
“Kitty embarks on a distinct journey compared to Lara Jean. Yet, both are teenage girls, and we keep their similarities in mind. Having worked on all three films offers us a mental catalog of songs that resonate with specific moments,” Wolfington noted. “As we depict Kitty’s character as fun and mischievous, we also see her mischief evolving into a more reflective tone, and translating that evolution into the music feels significant this season.”
Romance remains a pivotal element in XO, Kitty, consistent with Han’s storytelling style. As Kitty and her friends—Yuri (Gia Kim), Quincy (Anthony Keyvan), Juliana (Regan Aliyah), Dae (Choi Min-yeong), and Madison (Jocelyn Shelfo)—navigate the uncertainties surrounding their futures, Kitty must confront the complications of her own feelings for the charming Min-ho Moon (Sang Heon Lee).
“This season effectively captures the transitional phase where everyone is questioning their paths and making significant life choices, which is a healthy exploration,” Webb added. “While their world may feel smaller due to their connections, there’s an undeniable gravity in recognizing they might not see each other again, adding weight to their decisions.”
Additionally, the third season of XO, Kitty promises a cameo appearance from Condor’s Lara Jean. The latest trailer confirms that Lara Jean will offer guidance to her sister when Kitty is in desperate need of support and comfort through a night of indulgent snacks. “By the time of movie three, Lara Jean is celebrating her senior year. Reflecting on our efforts for season three, we find it remarkable that Kitty has reached this pivotal stage,” Wolfington mentioned. “It’s fascinating to witness history repeating itself in a meaningful manner.”
