'Most difficult decision ever': Receipts Podcast hosts step down after 10 years

After a decade of groundbreaking conversations and cultural commentary, The Receipts Podcast hosts Audrey Indome and Tolly Shoneye have announced their decision to step down from their hosting roles.

The duo described the choice as both emotionally challenging and strategically necessary for their continued growth and the show's evolution.

"I've never cried so much in my life, it's the most difficult decision ever," Tolly shared with the BBC, highlighting the profound personal impact of this transition.

Since its inception in 2016, The Receipts Podcast has established itself as a vital platform for Black women's voices, producing nearly 300 episodes that tackle diverse topics with authenticity and insight. The show's influence extends beyond its original format, having spawned a successful BBC spin-off that achieved the historic milestone of becoming the first podcast hosted by Black and brown women to reach number one on the Apple Podcasts chart.

The podcast's commercial success was further cemented by a lucrative exclusive partnership with Spotify in 2019, demonstrating its significant market impact and cultural relevance.

Despite these achievements, both hosts recognize that stepping away represents an opportunity for personal and professional evolution. Audrey explained her perspective: "I can get comfortable and I could probably do this for 20 or 30 more years without evolving. That's why the relationship between me and Tolly works, because she's a visionary and I need someone to kick me into action."

Rather than marking an end, this transition represents a strategic shift. Both hosts will remain involved with the podcast's future, moving to behind-the-scenes roles to guide its continued development while new voices take the microphone.

Innovative Host Search Strategy

The search for new hosts will follow what the duo describes as a "Pod Idol"-style approach, designed to discover fresh talent while providing valuable learning opportunities for all participants.

"We don't want copies of us," Tolly emphasized. "We want new voices, new perspectives and new ideas."

The comprehensive selection process will incorporate open applications, educational workshops, and training programs, ensuring that even unsuccessful candidates gain valuable industry knowledge and skills.

Tolly's commitment to inclusivity is particularly noteworthy: "There are so many talented people who don't have the means or won't get scouted, and we want to help them. I have a speech impediment, I stutter, so for people who feel like they're not the 'typical' host, I want this to feel like a home."

This approach reflects their broader mission of creating opportunities and breaking down barriers within the media industry. Audrey reinforced this commitment: "No-one gave us anything when we started, we had to graft. We went in totally blind and now we can mentor others and give people the opportunity we didn't have."

From Side Hustle to Cultural Phenomenon

The podcast's journey from humble beginnings to industry influence illustrates the power of authentic content creation. Audrey initially viewed the venture as "just a side hustle," admitting she "never thought I could make a career out of talking." This organic growth trajectory demonstrates how genuine passion and consistent quality can translate into professional success.

Tolly's reflection on their impact reveals the broader significance of their work: "When it becomes part of your everyday, you forget how big it is, but it's amazing that it's actually left its mark on British podcasting."

The hosts have developed sophisticated strategies for managing the challenges that accompany public visibility. Audrey has established clear boundaries regarding social media engagement, explaining: "You have to differentiate reality from online, otherwise you get absorbed in it." Her practical approach includes utilizing privacy controls and comment restrictions during periods when her capacity for public interaction is limited.

The partnership between the two hosts has proven crucial for navigating industry pressures. As Tolly noted: "If you were doing this solo, you'd lose your mind. We got through it because we had each other."

Navigating Personal Boundaries and Public Engagement

Despite their podcast's reputation for candid discussion, both hosts have maintained intentional boundaries around personal disclosure. Tolly describes herself as "quite guarded" and has chosen to delay discussing significant life events, including her father's death and her mother's cancer treatment, until she felt emotionally prepared to share those experiences constructively.

"I just wasn't ready to talk about it and it was years later that I did and I wanted to, because I thought it could help people," she explained, demonstrating the thoughtful approach they bring to balancing authenticity with personal well-being.

Learning from Challenges

The podcast's journey has included significant challenges, including the 2023 departure of former co-presenter Milena Sanchez following what was described as "years of a rift." This situation occurred during a particularly complex period, coinciding with Audrey's pregnancy and uncertainty around their Spotify partnership.

Audrey characterized the circumstances as creating "an unnecessary stain" on their legacy, particularly given their commitment to supporting women in media. The experience, while difficult, ultimately strengthened the core partnership between Audrey and Tolly.

"I remember crying, holding my baby, thinking the podcast was over and then I spoke to Tolly and she was making sure everything was ticking over in the background," Audrey recalled, highlighting the resilience that has characterized their professional relationship.

These experiences have informed their approach to supporting future hosts. Tolly emphasized that successful podcasting extends beyond on-air chemistry: "It's not just about what happens on the episode but how you work together behind the scenes."

As The Receipts Podcast prepares for its next chapter with new hosts, Audrey and Tolly's legacy as pioneers in British podcasting remains secure. Their commitment to mentorship and opportunity creation ensures that their influence will continue to shape the industry's future.

The Receipts Podcast is touring the UK in May.
