'Fearless' Mel Schilling remembered by Married at First Sight co-star

Paul C Brunson, longtime co-star of Mel Schilling on Married at First Sight UK, has delivered a heartfelt tribute to his colleague following her passing on Tuesday. Schilling, who courageously battled cancer for two years while maintaining her professional commitments, was described by Brunson as "fearless," "tough," and "deeply loved."

The respected relationship expert, who starred on both the Australian and UK versions of the popular reality television series, continued filming until the end of her life. Her dedication to the show remained unwavering despite her ongoing medical treatment.

E4 honored Schilling's wishes by proceeding with the broadcast of the Australian edition on Tuesday evening, with a statement confirming that continuing the show was "Mel and her family's wish" following her death.

Brunson, who worked alongside Schilling as a relationship coach for five years, shared intimate photographs and praised her "extraordinary strength" in managing the demanding schedule of international travel between Australia and the UK while undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

"Despite the travel, the treatment, the strain on her body... she showed up fully," Brunson noted. "Every single time. Always with a smile. I never once heard her complain. That wasn't just professionalism. That was extraordinary strength."

The tribute highlighted Schilling's advocacy work on the program, particularly her "fearless" defense of women and the LGBTQ+ community. Brunson characterized her as a "straight talker" who demonstrated strength in all aspects of her work, while revealing her softer side when discussing her family, including daughter Maddie and husband Gareth.

"She showed us what it means to live your values and to show up with strength, even when it's hard," Brunson concluded. "She was present. She was powerful. She was full of heart. She will be deeply loved and profoundly missed."

The Channel 4/E4 reality series, which follows singles who agree to marry complete strangers upon first meeting at the altar, received recognition at the 2024 BAFTA TV Awards with a nomination for best reality show.

Industry colleagues honor Schilling's legacy

Channel 4's official response emphasized the profound impact of Schilling's loss across the organization. An E4 announcer stated before Tuesday's broadcast: "Everyone at Channel 4 is hugely saddened by the news we've lost Mel Schilling. It was Mel and her family's wish that we carry on showing Married at First Sight and celebrate her mission to help others find love and happiness."

Alessandra Rampolla, a fellow relationship coach on the Australian version of the show, shared an emotional tribute expressing her gratitude for their recent time together. "I feel so incredibly grateful for the time we shared last week... to look you in the eyes, to hold your hand, and to say the things that truly mattered," she wrote. "That is a gift I will carry with me for the rest of my life."

Rampolla described Schilling as transcending professional boundaries, calling her "a constant, a guiding force, and someone I admired and learned from - like a big sister, a woman of immense heart, wisdom, and generosity."

The tributes collectively paint a picture of a professional who maintained the highest standards of dedication while facing personal adversity, leaving behind a lasting impact on both colleagues and the television industry.
