Under The Island draws inspiration from both Link to the Past and Stardew Valley.
While the Legend of Zelda series is known for its grand adventures, it also encompasses a comforting quality, featuring charming villages and scenic landscapes. Under The Island enhances this concept, providing exploration and puzzle-solving akin to that found in Zelda titles, all set within a cozy, cheerful world reminiscent of Stardew Valley. This enchanting environment invites players to linger, even outside the thrill of monster battles.
In the game, you assume the role of Nia, a newcomer to the seemingly ordinary Seashell Island. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the island harbors deeper mysteries, as Nia embarks on a quest to prevent it from plunging into the ocean. True to the Zelda legacy, this mission involves navigating the island to gather essential items. Although Seashell Island is relatively small, it is teeming with activity, featuring dense forests and sprawling beaches inhabited by creatures, intricate dungeon-like structures filled with puzzles, and a cast of townsfolk who always seem in need of assistance.
Under The Island offers a gameplay experience reminiscent of the 16-bit era Zelda titles—specifically A Link to the Past—positioning it as a 2D action-adventure game rich with puzzles. Instead of wielding a sword like Link, Nia equips a hockey stick, which functions similarly in the game's mechanics.
