OpenAI Shuttering Sora Video App Just Months After Launch
OpenAI has officially announced the discontinuation of Sora, its social media platform exclusively featuring AI-generated video content, marking the end of a brief but impactful venture into consumer video applications.
"To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you," OpenAI stated in its Tuesday announcement. "What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We'll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work."
The journey began in December 2025 when OpenAI initially released the Sora model to ChatGPT Pro and ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the United States and Canada. This groundbreaking text-to-video AI technology enabled users to generate dynamic visual content from simple text prompts, producing everything from artistic animations to remarkably photorealistic footage. Building on this foundation, the company launched a dedicated mobile application in September, creating a TikTok-inspired social media experience centered entirely on artificial intelligence-generated content.
The platform's interface allowed users to browse AI-generated videos in a familiar social feed format, with functionality for liking and remixing content created by other users. The app achieved immediate success, quickly ascending to the top position in the iOS App Store's Photo and Video category downloads.
However, Sora's rapid rise was accompanied by significant challenges. The platform encountered persistent issues with copyright infringement and the creation of deepfake content, raising concerns about the responsible deployment of AI-generated media in social contexts.
In a notable development, The Walt Disney Company announced a substantial partnership with OpenAI in December, securing a three-year licensing agreement that would have brought over 200 Disney characters to the Sora platform. This deal included a planned $1 billion investment from Disney in OpenAI's technology.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Disney's investment arrangement has now been terminated following OpenAI's decision to shut down Sora. A Disney spokesperson commented on the situation, stating, "As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere."
Despite ending consumer access to Sora, OpenAI confirmed that the underlying research will continue. An OpenAI spokesperson informed Rolling Stone that while the consumer application and API will be discontinued, the Sora research team will redirect its efforts toward "world simulation research to advance robotics that will help people solve real-world, physical tasks."
This strategic pivot suggests OpenAI is moving away from consumer-facing video generation applications in favor of more specialized technical applications that could have significant implications for robotics and automation industries.
