Struijk red card after VAR intervention overturned
Pascal Struijk received a red card from referee Thomas Bramall during the 57th minute of Brighton's match against Sunderland.
The red card issued to Brighton defender Pascal Struijk after a VAR intervention has been overturned following a successful wrongful dismissal appeal.
Struijk was dismissed after it was determined that he had fouled Sunderland forward Wilson Isidor while attempting to chase down a through-ball. Initially, neither referee Thomas Bramall nor his assistant indicated a foul, but VAR Neil Davies intervened, prompting the on-field official to review the incident.
After multiple reviews of the footage, Bramall issued a straight red card for what was determined to be a denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity. This decision was met with incredulity by the Brighton players and has now been rescinded.
As a result of this appeal outcome, Struijk will avoid a one-match ban and will be eligible to play against Crystal Palace in the upcoming Premier League fixture.
Struijk, who joined Brighton from Leeds in a £20 million transfer this summer, was making only his second Premier League start for the club. Despite the red card incident, Brighton secured a 2-0 victory in the match, further solidifying their positive start to the season. The Seagulls currently sit third in the league, five points behind leaders Manchester City.
Analysis: Referee should have rejected VAR advice
Had referee Bramall's decision led to Struijk's dismissal without the VAR intervention, it would still have been considered a poor judgment. The fact that it was influenced by VAR complicates the situation further.
Red cards for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity via VAR reviews are infrequently issued due to the extensive subjective factors involved. Last season, there were only three such incidents—pertaining to Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai, Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix, and Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi (the latter being incorrectly rejected at the monitor).
In this case, there was significant uncertainty regarding whether Isidor would reach the ball before goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. This situation points to it being a potential goalscoring opportunity, rather than an obvious one.
Given the stringent standards for VAR assessments in the Premier League, Bramall should have declined the monitor's advice. It is possible that his decision-making was influenced by the lack of an initial foul call, but this scenario necessitated a more resolute rejection of the VAR's input.
