Italy’s aspirations for World Cup glory were once again thwarted this week, as the men's soccer team suffered a defeat in a critical playoff match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
With the score level at 1-1 following regulation time, the game proceeded to a penalty shootout. Unfortunately for Italy, they were unable to score on two of their attempts, while Bosnia and Herzegovina successfully converted four penalties. Consequently, Bosnia and Herzegovina secured their place in this summer’s World Cup, joining Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland in Group B.
This marks the third consecutive time that the four-time World Champions have failed to qualify, having missed out on opportunities in both 2018 and 2022. Following this latest setback, Italy's World Cup drought is set to extend until at least 2030.
