Three women who died off Brighton beach identified

Authorities have confirmed the identities of the three women who tragically lost their lives in the waters off Brighton beach, following an extensive investigation.

According to Sussex Police, emergency services were first alerted on Wednesday at approximately 05:45 BST regarding an individual in the water near Black Rock car park, located on Madeira Drive, which parallels the beachfront. Upon their arrival, two additional bodies were discovered nearby.

Bella Sankey, the leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, described the incident as "the most devastating news" the city has received "for a very long time." She emphasized the tragedy of the situation, stating, "I can't think of anything more tragic or more horrendous really," in an interview with BBC Radio Sussex. "This is the last thing that anyone wants or expects to happen."

A spokesperson for the police confirmed that the women's next of kin have been notified and that formal identification processes are currently underway. They noted, "It would not be appropriate to publicly name the women before these procedures are completed."

While the circumstances leading to the women's presence in the water remain unclear, the coastguard has concluded their search operations and reported that no further individuals are being sought. Authorities stated that there is no evidence to suggest that third-party involvement or any criminal activity occurred.

A significant cordon was established around the beach at Black Rock while emergency responders managed the situation; the beach has since reopened to the public. Authorities indicated that the bodies were initially sighted at Brighton Palace Pier before drifting towards the marina. Investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry, including the possibility that the women entered the water from the nearby beach and subsequently encountered difficulties.

Law enforcement is appealing for anyone with pertinent information to come forward and assist with their investigation while urging the public to refrain from speculation regarding the case.

Ch Supt Adam Hays expressed his condolences, stating, "This is an utterly heartbreaking tragedy. My thoughts are with the loved ones of these three young women after their devastating loss. They will remain at the forefront of our minds as we search for the answers their families, and the wider public, desperately seek."

'Treacherous seas'

Guy Jones, a resident of nearby Kemptown, shared his sentiments, remarking, "It's very sad for all of us who associate this part of the coastline with happiness and peace. To have lost three young women in the prime of their lives brings a great sadness to the whole community, as well, obviously, to the family and friends."

Ash Middleton, a Brighton Marina resident, added, "It's very sad and I think it's just sad for Brighton as well. I'm a swimmer myself and the seas here are quite treacherous." Another resident, Judy, noted, "It just makes it feel more poignant and frightening actually that it can happen so close."

Peter Kyle, MP for Hove and Portslade, called the incident a "sobering and heartbreaking reminder that our families, neighbours and communities are what is important." He acknowledged the dual nature of the seafront, stating, "Our seafront is one of the many jewels in the crown of our city, but the sea can be a risk." On that day, he expressed his thoughts for the families and friends affected by this tragedy.

Council leader Bella Sankey mentioned the efforts made to enhance lifeguard coverage during the summer months, commenting that despite these efforts, challenges remain. She noted that the council had recently completed a safety review of the seafront.

As a result of this incident, the Brighton chapter of an annual nationwide protest aimed at demanding accountability from the water sector has been canceled. The event, known as Paddle Out and organized by the Surfers Against Sewage campaign group, had planned to gather groups at over 50 locations on Saturday.
