While patrons at EL&N’s London establishments often focus on the trendy pink aesthetics and vibrant floral installations, recent inspections have unveiled significant concerns. Two of its eleven UK locations recently did not meet the standards set by the UK’s Food Standards Agency, which serves a similar role to state food inspectors in the United States. Despite being one of the most recognizable café brands on social media, the outcomes of these inspections highlight a disparity between public perception and actual operational practices.
The St Pancras branch in London was awarded a Food Hygiene rating of 1 following an inspection conducted this winter. In accordance with UK regulations, a rating of 1 signifies that "major improvement is necessary," reflecting serious concerns regarding hygiene practices, cleanliness, and food safety management. Although this rating does not necessitate immediate closure, it does compel the establishment to enact prompt corrective measures. A follow-up inspection is mandated, and failure to address these issues could lead to the business being shut down.
Data pertaining to businesses across the UK indicates that a score of 1 is uncommon. The latest statistics reveal that approximately 60 to 65 percent of establishments receive a rating of 5, the apex rating, while 20 to 25 percent attain a score of 4 and five to 10 percent achieve a score of 3. Only a minimal fraction—less than five percent—obtain a rating of 0, 1, or 2.
In addition to the London location, EL&N's Birmingham branch also garnered negative attention from health inspectors, receiving a rating of 2 due to deficiencies in food safety management and operational standards. Similar to the London location, this rating requires corrective actions but does not lead to an immediate closure.
