Michael Jackson's Legendary Super Bowl Halftime Show Is Getting Its Own Documentary

A forthcoming documentary titled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl will premiere on Hulu and ESPN in February 2027, focusing on the iconic legacy of Michael Jackson's halftime show at Super Bowl XXVII.

The film will provide an in-depth exploration of Jackson's 1993 performance at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. It will incorporate a wealth of previously unseen footage showcasing Jackson and his team’s meticulous preparations for the event, while also analyzing how this performance established a new benchmark for pop spectacles during halftime shows.

Ranked 16th in Rolling Stone's list of Super Bowl halftime shows, Jackson's performance commenced with a striking voiceover introduction by James Earl Jones. Following this, the King of Pop emerged from a trap door onto the stage, remaining silent for nearly two minutes as he absorbed the fervent cheers from the audience.

During the performance, Jackson delivered a selection of his greatest hits, including "Billie Jean," "Black or White," and "We Are the World." Notably, for "We Are the World" and the closing song "Heal the World," he was accompanied by a choir of 3,000 children from the Los Angeles area.

Directed by Bao Nguyen, who previously directed The Greatest Night in Pop, a documentary detailing the making of "We Are the World," Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is anticipated to have its release date announced soon, with February 2027 set as the target month.

The Super Bowl XXVII Halftime Show stood out as a significant highlight in what would become a challenging year for Jackson. In August 1993, the Los Angeles Police Department initiated an investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse against him. This led to a lawsuit filed by the family of one of the accusers, Jordan Chandler, in September. Subsequently, in December, Jackson underwent a strip search conducted by police, who photographed and recorded videos of his body.

In early 1994, Jackson reached a settlement with the Chandlers. While he consistently denied all allegations of sexual abuse, his estate has maintained this stance even after his death.
