Maren Morris Hits Back at Shane Gillis' 'SNL' Joke About Women Being 'Whores' at the Gym

Maren Morris has boldly addressed Shane Gillis' contentious monologue from Saturday Night Live, where he made disparaging remarks about women's gym attire.

During his hosting duties on the late-night show, Gillis observed how women dress at the gym, stating, "I haven't been to the gym in so long I didn't know women just dress like whores now?" He elaborated on the colors and styles of shorts women wear, making a series of derogatory comments. "Look, I'm sorry, there's no other way to describe it. Have you seen it? I've seen it. You've seen the shorts? They're those neon, like, artificial bait-colored. And the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don't look! You're not allowed to look. For real, don't look, because they are filming."

In response, Morris opted for a straightforward approach, posting an Instagram video of herself with the caption "me being a wh0re at the gym." The video was set to her track "Be a Bitch," which includes the lines: "Breaking my neck from turning my cheek/ Killing with kindness only killed me/ If the truth means I'm a little too mean/ Tried to fake nice, but it didn't quite stick/ I'd rather be a bitch." The video concluded with Morris giving a defiant middle finger to the camera, accompanied by the caption, "leave my gym short wedgie out of it."

Celebrity Responses

Gillis' remarks have sparked significant backlash across social media, with numerous celebrities condemning his comments as misogynistic. Former SNL cast member Ego Nwodim shared a gym selfie on her Instagram Stories with the phrase, "whore reporting for duty." Meanwhile, Dan Levy voiced his disbelief in an Instagram video, stating he was "speechless that something like that can exist on live national television."

Levy articulated a critical perspective on the issue, asserting, "Women wearing short shorts to the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores, misogynists. There's a difference there. By the way, I've seen more men's nipples in the gym than I've ever seen women showing their bodies off."

Background

Shane Gillis was previously dismissed from SNL in 2019 due to racist and homophobic comments but has since been invited back to host on three occasions. In addition to the uproar caused by his comments about women's gym attire, Gillis also dropped an F-bomb during a sketch featured in Saturday's show, during a Dr. Seuss-themed bit called "Green Eggs and Ham." He concluded the sketch with an apology, stating, "Sorry about earlier."
