Boyz II Men Join Cody Johnson for Surprise 'On Bended Knee' Performance at Stagecoach

Country music headliner Cody Johnson delivered an unexpected highlight during his Friday night set at Stagecoach when R&B legends Boyz II Men made a surprise appearance for a collaborative performance of their 1994 Motown classic "On Bended Knee."

Johnson began the performance solo, transitioning into the beloved ballad before the Philadelphia-based trio—Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, and Shawn Stockman—emerged on stage to join him. The unexpected collaboration captivated the festival crowd, creating a memorable crossover moment as thousands swayed to the iconic love song.

This appearance marks another notable crossover performance for Boyz II Men, who recently participated in the 20th anniversary celebration of Nashville's prestigious Listening Room last month, collaborating with Brett Young on his hit "In Case You Didn't Know."

Johnson's Stagecoach performance comes as he prepares to release his tenth studio album, Banks Of The Trinity, scheduled for June 26. The project holds particular significance for the artist, as he explained: "On this album, I wanted to tell the story about my childhood. When I heard the song 'Banks of the Trinity' for the first time, it was like this portrait showed in my head of memories that I had honestly forgotten. It just took me back home to Sebastopol, Texas, where I grew up on the Trinity River. I had tears in my eyes when I heard it for the first time."

The performance represents a return to full touring capacity for Johnson, who is currently navigating his 2026 tour across the United States and Canada. The extensive tour includes stops in major markets such as St. Louis, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, and Knoxville, Tennessee, before expanding internationally. This tour marks Johnson's comeback after being forced to cancel his remaining 2025 dates due to a burst eardrum that required surgical intervention and several weeks of recovery.

Johnson has previously articulated his ambitious approach to live performance, telling Rolling Stone in 2024: "I take a very athletic standpoint toward my tours. You always want to outdo the last one, and outdo the last one after that. But there have been so many big, significant things that have happened for us this year that it is clear the wave is starting to roll. Now, we've gotta stay ahead of the wave."
