Rapper Megan Thee Stallion was taken to the hospital during her performance of Moulin Rouge! The Musical in New York City on Tuesday night, as confirmed by her representative.

According to the spokesperson, "Megan started feeling very ill and was promptly transported to a local hospital, where her symptoms are currently being evaluated." They added, "We will share additional updates as more information becomes available."

The 31-year-old artist is making her highly anticipated Broadway debut as Zidler, the eccentric master of ceremonies in the production.

Her hairstylist, Kellon Deryck, shared his concerns on the social media platform X, stating, "Everyone say a prayer for Megan, we are all at the hospital."

Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, is slated to portray Zidler until May 17, according to the official Moulin Rouge website. Prior to her opening, she expressed excitement about transitioning from concerts to theatre performances, declaring on social media after her debut on March 24, "HOTTIES IM ON BROADWAY!!" in reference to her fanbase known as the "hotties."

The artist is recognized for her chart-topping hits, including Savage, WAP, and Body. In 2021, she won three Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song, Best New Artist, and Best Rap Performance, and in the following year, she received a nomination for Album of the Year.

Harold Zidler, the character she is portraying, was originally played by Danny Burstein in the inaugural Broadway cast of Moulin Rouge, earning a prestigious Tony Award for his performance in 2020. More recently, the celebrated drag artist Bob the Drag Queen portrayed Zidler in the musical for an eight-week engagement earlier this year.

The BBC has reached out to Megan Thee Stallion's team for further comment.
