The Royal Sonesta Kauaʻi Resort Lihue has completed a multi-year transformation featuring 356 renovated guest rooms, a 26,000-square-foot lagoon pool—the largest single-level pool in Hawaii—and four on-site restaurants with oceanfront views of Kalapaki Bay.

This Revamped Kaua'i Resort Has the Largest Single-Level Pool in Hawai'i

"There's a rule on the island: you can't build higher than a coconut tree," explains Soraya Sutera, the director of sales at The Royal Sonesta Kauaʻi Resort Lihue, as she guides me through the hotel’s grand white columns and expansive walkways. This principle, a reminder of Kauaʻi's picturesque backdrop, does not apply to the resort, which was constructed in 1960, prior to the implementation of the height restriction.

Soaring 10 stories above Kalapaki Bay, The Royal Sonesta provides exceptional vistas overlooking the water and the lush hills that punctuate the landscape.

As Sutera leads me through enchanting tropical gardens, past a serene koi pond, and across a charming wooden bridge, I feel my pace slow, easing me into a blissful vacation mindset.

Renovated rooms and Kalapaki Bay views

Completing a multi-year transformation in 2025, the resort underwent a comprehensive renovation impacting all 356 guest rooms and suites as well as public areas, dining establishments, and outdoor spaces. The redesign embraces a modern island aesthetic characterized by lighter, more spacious interiors, natural textures, and a soothing color palette that reflects the surrounding beauty of Kalapaki Bay.

In a King Ocean View room, the updates are immediately evident. The furnishings and fixtures exude a fresh, contemporary vibe, while warm wood tones and textiles enhance the inviting atmosphere. Floor-to-ceiling windows capture sweeping views of the ocean and the verdant hills, and the balcony offers an ideal vantage point to soak in the resort and bay.

This private outdoor space quickly becomes the centerpiece of one’s stay. Sipping prosecco, guests can observe finches flitting about as a form of pre-dinner entertainment. Mornings unfold leisurely with coffee in hand while watching the sunlight dance across the water; evenings are accompanied by the soothing sounds of the ocean waves. Inside, amenities such as the walk-in waterfall shower, spacious grey sofa, and oversized plush king bed elevate the experience of understated luxury.

Room rates begin at approximately $354 per night for a 453-square-foot Garden View King, with Preferred Ocean View rooms at 463 square feet priced around $504 per night.

A superlative pool, your pick of cabanas, and lineup of weekly activities

One of the highlights of the Royal Sonesta is undeniably its lagoon-shaped pool, which spans an impressive 26,000 square feet, making it the largest single-level pool in Hawaiʻi. Early morning swims offer a sense of exclusivity, with five jacuzzis surrounding the pool area ensuring ample relaxation spots without competition. Additionally, sun loungers are plentiful, removing the need for an early morning dash to secure seating.

Adjacent to the pool, a koi pond weaves through the tropical gardens where guests gather to witness the daily feeding. The water’s surface briefly remains calm before bursts of colorful koi create a vibrant spectacle.

As the day progresses, guests can transition to one of the cabanas near the ocean, stocked with cookies, water, and attentive service from the on-site restaurant, Kukui's on Kalapaki Beach. Lunch includes tantalizing mahi-mahi tacos and refreshing Mai Tai cocktails, delivered straight to your cabana. Poolside cabanas are also available, offering a spacious and peaceful environment.

Additional facilities include the Alexander Day Spa & Salon, a 24-hour fitness center, and a variety of yoga and aqua fit classes. A dynamic schedule of weekly activities features an array of cultural walks, hula lessons, fresh flower lei making, and Hawaiian language basics.

A short trail meanders through a golf course and onto a tranquil rural path, gradually revealing dramatic coastal cliffs. At Nīnini Point Lighthouse, visitors can pause to appreciate the rolling waves crashing against the rocks while taking in the view of the bay and the resort.

Every Thursday, the resort hosts a vibrant luau named "Drums and Dances of Polynesia" at the beachfront of Kalapaki Bay. As the golden hour casts a warm glow over the sands and palm trees, guests are greeted with a purple orchid lei before being directed to a buffet featuring fresh poke, grilled mahi-mahi, sweet potatoes, and greens.

The evening unfolds gradually, beginning with gentle Hawaiian melodies and hula that transition into more rhythmic movements. As night falls, the enchanting sounds of drums evolve from a steady beat into a crescendo of energy. The performance narrates journeys across Polynesia through movement, chant, and song. By the time fire dancers take the stage, the atmosphere is charged, with flames swirling dramatically against the backdrop of the night sky.

A restaurant or bar for every mood

The resort boasts four on-site dining options, catering to a variety of tastes. The Royal Lanai serves as a convenient grab-and-go breakfast bar ideal for a quick coffee and pastry before heading to the pool. By evening, it transforms into The Royal Lanai Sushi & Spirits, offering low lighting and meticulously arranged sushi and sashimi plates.

Kukui's on Kalapaki Beach provides a full-service breakfast, transitioning seamlessly into lunch and dinner offerings throughout the day. Nearby, Kai's Bar contrasts with a lively, social setting that invites guests to unwind.

Duke's Kaua'i stands out as an iconic venue, named after legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku. It exudes a nostalgic feel, adorned with surf memorabilia and enhanced by sweeping views over Kalapaki Bay.

For a more intimate dining experience, Café Portofino offers a quieter ambiance with white tablecloths, soft lighting, and a menu featuring classic Italian dishes, often accompanied by live music.

Getting to The Royal Sonesta Kauaʻi Resort

Accessibility to the hotel is exceptionally convenient, situated just two miles from Kaua'i's Līhu'e Airport (LIH). A brief ride on the complimentary shuttle provides direct access to the resort.
