My Favorite Airbnb: A Lovingly Restored 18th-Century Manor in Suffolk

A single photograph of an emerald-green paneled bathroom was all it took to capture my attention during a casual browse through social media. Initially mistaken for an architectural design feature, the image led me to the Airbnb listing for Melton Hall, a remarkable 18th-century manor house in Suffolk that would become the centerpiece of our spring family getaway.

The property's impressive credentials spoke for themselves: a checkerboard swimming pool, 7.5 acres of meticulously maintained grounds featuring a walled rose garden and wildflower meadow, thoughtfully designed children's spaces, and proximity to Suffolk's stunning coastline. With the spring school holidays approaching, Melton Hall presented itself as an ideal destination for a memorable family staycation.

The reality exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. Melton Hall represents a masterful integration of contemporary design elements within carefully preserved Georgian architecture. Upon entering through the grand pillared entrance, guests are welcomed by a luminous hall adorned with modern artwork and soaring arched ceilings. The sophisticated living room, positioned to the left of the entrance, offers panoramic views of the pristinely landscaped gardens through expansive windows. A unique feature includes a concealed television that emerges at the touch of a button, cleverly hiding behind a renaissance painting—a perfect embodiment of the property's seamless blend of modern convenience and historical character.

The manor's three floors provide ample space for exploration, with each room maintaining consistent aesthetic excellence. The design philosophy emphasizes restraint and quality: floor-length curtains, carefully curated artwork, and comfortable furnishings create an atmosphere of understated luxury throughout the property.

A Perfect Family Retreat

The property's most delightful surprise awaits discovery through an ingeniously concealed entrance. A hidden bookcase in the hallway opens to reveal a state-of-the-art cinema room, complete with Monitor Audio Dolby Surround Sound and comfortable seating for seven guests. This cozy retreat proved invaluable during typical British spring weather, providing the perfect venue for family movie marathons.

The extensive grounds offer numerous opportunities for outdoor activities and exploration. The property's layout proved ideal for organized activities, with gardens featuring antique statuary, a productive vegetable garden, tennis court facilities, and a distinctive swimming pool area furnished with sculptural Willy Guhl loop chairs. The diverse landscape provides endless possibilities for both structured activities and free exploration.

Local dining options enhance the overall experience significantly. The nearby Unruly Pig, recognized as the top establishment in the UK's Top 50 Gastropubs Awards, offers exceptional cuisine including Skrei cod loin, Iberico pork, and an outstanding macaroni cheese that transcends typical children's menu offerings.

This experience fundamentally shifted perspectives on vacation rental accommodations. While hotel stays traditionally offer convenience through comprehensive services, Melton Hall demonstrated that exceptional private properties can provide equally rewarding experiences when they combine historical significance, contemporary amenities, and thoughtful design in such extraordinary fashion.
