Nearly two decades have passed since the film adaptation of Mamma Mia! premiered in theaters around the globe. This cinematic rendition of Catherine Johnson's 1999 British musical whisked audiences away to a fictional Greek island, where various love tales unfolded to the melodic hits of ABBA, a band renowned for its widespread popularity.
The film featured a remarkable cast including Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, and Julie Walters. Its enthusiastic reception paved the way for a sequel in 2018, titled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which delved into the backstories of the characters through flashbacks.

Although both films are set in the imaginary island of Kalokairi, the actual filming sprawled across different, equally stunning, European islands. The initial movie mainly took place on the Greek island of Skopelos in 2007, with significant scenes shot at Kastani Beach, famed for its alabaster sand and striking vistas. Iconic moments included Sophie and her fiancé Sky's beach escapade and Tanya's performance of Does Your Mother Know.
Numerous scenes depicting Villa Donna, the inn ran by Meryl Streep’s character, were filmed at Pinewood Studios in the UK, but the picturesque views were imagined at Glysteri Beach on Skopelos.
Some of the film’s most unforgettable sequences feature the cliffs from which Sophie and her fathers leap into the water, beautifully complemented by the tune of Our Last Summer, highlighting the film’s spectacular backdrop.
In the sequel, the majority of the filming took place on Vis Island in Croatia, particularly in the town of Komiza, introducing new locales while preserving the charm of the original production.
The stunning Agios Ioannis Chapel, which acted as the wedding venue in the film, cannot be overlooked. Perched dramatically on a 100-meter high cliff, the chapel offered breathtaking views and was designed to mirror a different local church for interior scenes shot at Pinewood Studios.
