Microsoft has implemented an out-of-band update to resolve issues associated with the March 2026 non-security preview update, which was suspended over the weekend due to installation errors.

This optional cumulative update, identified as KB5079391, was released on Thursday for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems. It introduced 29 enhancements, including improvements to Smart App Control and Display functionality.

Immediately following the rollout, users began experiencing errors indicating that "Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)."

In response to the mounting user reports, Microsoft halted the optional update rollout and acknowledged the installation issues along with the 0x80073712 errors.

On Tuesday, Microsoft released the Windows 11 KB5086672 emergency update designed for affected versions 25H2 and 24H2, effectively replacing the problematic KB5079391 preview update.

"An out-of-band (OOB) update was released today, March 31, 2026, to address this installation issue. This cumulative OOB update for Windows 11, versions 25H2 and 24H2 (KB5086672) supersedes all previous updates and includes all protections and improvements from the March 2026 Windows security and non-security preview updates, as well as this installation fix," Microsoft stated.

"Devices set to receive the latest updates as soon as they are available may see this update automatically through Windows Update when it is ready for their device. If this setting is disabled, users can install the update manually by navigating to Settings > Windows Update and selecting Download & install."

Earlier in the week, Microsoft released another emergency update to address a significant problem caused by the recent Patch Tuesday Windows 11 security updates, which disrupted sign-ins with Microsoft accounts across various applications, including Teams, OneDrive, the Edge web browser, and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Since the beginning of the month, Microsoft has also delivered two additional out-of-band updates aimed at hotpatch-enabled Windows 11 Enterprise devices. These updates addressed a Bluetooth device visibility issue and multiple security vulnerabilities in the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) management tool.

Additionally, guidance was published to resolve C:\ drive access problems on Samsung Windows 11 laptops, which were caused by malfunctioning versions of the Samsung Galaxy Connect and Samsung Continuity Service applications.
