Anthony Gordon: Barcelona in talks to sign Newcastle forward

Barcelona have joined Bayern Munich in the race to sign Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon, with the La Liga champions holding formal talks over a potential deal. Gordon, who scored 17 goals for Newcastle this season, could command a fee of at least £70m as the club looks to rebuild after a disappointing 12th-place Premier League finish.

Barcelona in talks with Newcastle to sign Gordon

Barcelona has entered the fray alongside Bayern Munich in pursuing Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon. The La Liga champions have initiated discussions with Newcastle concerning a potential transfer deal for the England international.

Despite Barcelona's recent financial constraints, the club is reportedly in a position to utilize funds generated from player sales for new acquisitions. Bayern Munich has also engaged in formal talks with Newcastle; however, previous reports indicate discrepancies in the valuation between the two clubs.

Newcastle's chief executive David Hopkinson emphasized in March that the club would only sell players on "our terms." Currently, Newcastle holds a favorable position to demand a transfer fee of at least £70 million for Gordon, whose contract remains valid until 2030.

The club faces an imperative to make strategic trades this summer, particularly following a lackluster 12th-place finish in the Premier League. Gordon, who previously played for Everton, is positioned as the most likely departure from Newcastle's key players, having been the club's top-scorer this season. Notably, he was benched for the final four matches as head coach Eddie Howe appeared to be considering the future.

Fans expressed their affection for Gordon during the away game against Fulham on the season's final day, chanting his name, suggesting a potential farewell. When asked if this 25-year-old forward had played his last match for the club, Howe responded, "I don't know, as I said in the build-up to the game. You can never predict what's going to happen. He obviously goes to the World Cup now, so we wish him well."

In addition to Gordon, Barcelona has shown interest in acquiring Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Chelsea striker Joao Pedro. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich has the option to permanently sign Marcus Rashford, Gordon's international teammate, for £26 million following his loan from Manchester United.

Analysis - A shift in approach after Isak saga

There is a tangible possibility that Newcastle may lose their top-scorer for the second consecutive summer. This raises the question: have the lessons learned from the problematic Alexander Isak situation been applied?

Initially, Newcastle stood firm when Isak expressed desire to transfer to Liverpool. However, the club ultimately conceded and sold the striker on deadline day for a British-record £125 million. In contrast to the previous summer when the club lacked an executive structure, Newcastle now boasts a chief executive, Hopkinson, and a sporting director, Ross Wilson.

The absence of a sporting director was acutely felt in handling the Isak scenario and managing agent negotiations. A notable shift in tone and strategy has since occurred. Former chief executive Darren Eales previously remarked that it would be "crazy" for Newcastle to sell their best players. However, Hopkinson adopted a different viewpoint in March, stating that the club would aim to "maximize the opportunity" and achieve the best possible price if players were to be sold this summer.

Consequently, the competition between Bayern and Barcelona may be viewed as an opportunity for Newcastle to secure a substantial transfer fee that could be reinvested into revitalizing a struggling team. Significantly, it appears that the club has been preparing for the possibility of Gordon's departure for some time.

Although Gordon has continued to train with his teammates and received praise for his attitude from head coach Howe, his recent position on the bench has been striking. Young talents Sean Neave and Alex Murphy even took the field ahead of him during the final match against Fulham, which conveys meaningful implications regarding his future.
