In a historic achievement, English teams have reached the finals of three distinct European competitions in a single season for the very first time.
Arsenal secured their spot in the Champions League final by triumphing 2-1 on aggregate against Atletico Madrid earlier this week. Following this success, both Aston Villa and Crystal Palace have also qualified for their respective finals.
Under the guidance of Unai Emery, Aston Villa overcame a 1-0 deficit from the first leg to achieve a commanding 4-1 aggregate victory against Nottingham Forest on Thursday. They will now contest the Europa League final against Bundesliga side Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20.
In a concurrent effort, Crystal Palace added to their momentum by winning 2-1 at Selhurst Park against Shakhtar Donetsk, following a 3-1 victory in the first leg. This win ensures their place in the Conference League final, where they will face Rayo Vallecano on May 28.
The Conference League, established five years ago, serves as the third tier of European football competitions, following the conclusion of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1999.
Last season nearly saw English teams achieve this milestone, with Chelsea winning the Conference League and Tottenham defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final. However, Arsenal was the last English representative in the Champions League, where they were eliminated by Paris St-Germain, the eventual champions.
Historically, the Premier League has witnessed multiple teams competing in finals of the Champions League and Europa League. In 2021, Chelsea clinched a victory over Manchester City in an all-Premier League Champions League final, while Manchester United faced defeat in the Europa League final.
Similarly, in 2019, Liverpool emerged victorious against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final, while Chelsea triumphed over Arsenal in the Europa League final held in Baku.
Conversely, in 2006, English teams were unsuccessful in both finals; Arsenal lost to Barcelona in the Champions League, and Middlesbrough suffered a 4-0 defeat to Sevilla in the UEFA Cup.
To find a season when English clubs simultaneously won two out of the three available competitions, one must look back over 20 years. In 1984, Liverpool secured their fourth European Cup by defeating Roma, while Spurs claimed their second UEFA Cup title by overcoming Anderlecht.
Liverpool also lifted the European Cup in 1981 with a narrow 1-0 victory against Real Madrid in Paris, and Ipswich Town, managed by Bobby Robson, achieved success by defeating AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Cup final.
Italy has previously seen clubs represent in all available finals multiple times, most recently in 2023, although their teams were runners-up in each final—Inter in the Champions League, Roma in the Europa League, and Fiorentina in the Conference League.
In the season of 1993-94, Serie A won two out of three finals, with AC Milan prevailing in the Champions League, Inter winning the UEFA Cup, while Parma lost to Arsenal in the Cup Winners' Cup final. Notably, they also enjoyed dual victories in the seasons of 1992-93 and 1988-89.
In 1989-90, during a peak era for Italian football, Serie A clubs made history by winning all three competitions—Milan was crowned European champions, Juventus triumphed over Fiorentina in the UEFA Cup, and Sampdoria secured the Cup Winners' Cup.
Spanish clubs reached three finals in the 1985-86 season, with Real Madrid winning the UEFA Cup while Barcelona finished as runners-up in the European Cup and Atletico Madrid ended up as second in the Cup Winners' Cup.
