How Dusty May and Michigan turned a team of transfers into a national champion

Michigan won its first NCAA basketball title since 1989, defeating UConn 69-63 in the championship game. The victory came after coach Dusty May successfully recruited transfer players like Yaxel Lendeborg, who chose to return to college despite NBA interest.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before establishing himself as the cornerstone of Michigan's second-ever national championship basketball team, Yaxel Lendeborg faced a career-defining decision.

Following two successful seasons at UAB, the promising forward entered both the 2025 NBA draft and the transfer portal. NBA scouts projected him as a potential late first-round selection, creating an appealing professional pathway. However, the Michigan Wolverines presented an irresistible alternative: comprehensive player development combined with a substantial seven-figure NIL package designed to enhance his professional readiness.

"We emphasized his need to refine specific skills and committed to facilitating that development process," explained Michigan assistant coach Mike Boynton regarding the team's recruitment strategy.
