Ben Foakes Century Rescues Surrey After Early Collapse Against Warwickshire

Rothesay County Championship, Division One, Edgbaston (day 1)

Surrey 328: Foakes 128, Lawes 83; Bamber 3-59

Warwickshire: Yet to bat

Warwickshire 3 pts, Surrey 2 pts

A remarkable partnership between Ben Foakes and Tom Lawes proved pivotal for Surrey, who found themselves in a precarious position at 65-6 against Warwickshire on day one of the County Championship season at Edgbaston.

Both teams have been touted as potential title contenders, and they delivered a thrilling day's play as Surrey managed to recover and close their innings at 328 just before the end of the day.

The top-order batsmen struggled significantly, facing the effective bowling of Ethan Bamber (3-59) and Chris Woakes (2-56). However, Foakes, with an impressive score of 128 and Lawes contributing a career-best 83, formed a formidable seventh-wicket partnership of 155 runs in 41 overs. This partnership set a record for Surrey against Warwickshire in first-class cricket.

Despite the pitch providing assistance to the seamers, the performances of Foakes and Lawes ensured that Surrey accumulated a total that, while not overwhelming, remains highly competitive. Warwickshire would certainly reflect on missed opportunities as they lost their grip in the second and third sessions of play.

Early Collapse

With a significantly revamped seam attack, Warwickshire elected to bowl after winning the toss.

Surrey's early misfortune began in the third over, where Rory Burns ran himself out in a rather careless fashion. The captain's attempted single after playing Woakes to mid-on proved disastrous, as he failed to make his ground subsequent to an inaccurate throw by Ed Barnard, which was skilfully capitalized on by wicketkeeper Kai Smith.

Smith's crucial contributions continued as he dismissed Jamie Smith in the following over. After scoring a boundary off Bamber, Jamie attempted the same aggressive shot again, only to be caught by the keeper, who made a diving catch in front of slip.

Sibley and Ollie Pope tried to stabilize the innings, adding 38 runs over 18 overs, before Bamber returned to clinch Pope lbw. Sibley's stubbornness was somewhat reassuring for Surrey, as he sought to channel the resilience that Warwickshire fans have seen from him previously at Edgbaston, where he has achieved 50 runs or more on 16 occasions.

Unfortunately for Sibley, he could not make it to the half-century mark this time and fell as one of three wickets lost in a mere nine balls around the lunch break.

The Rebuild

Just before the interval, Dan Lawrence edged Bamber to Beau Webster, stationed at third slip. Woakes then struck in his first over of the afternoon, claiming two wickets in quick succession. Sibley (25) was brilliantly held by Rob Yates, diving low at second slip, while Ralphie Albert's stumps were knocked back, adding to Surrey's woes.

Facing a daunting score of 65-6 and an energetic bowling attack, Foakes and Lawes showcased remarkable resolve and skill during their partnership. Foakes's calm and composed approach set the standard, while his partner chose a more aggressive strategy, effectively capitalizing on any lapses in the bowling. Lawes reached his half-century off 79 balls, while Foakes reached his 51st from 93 deliveries, together amassing 133 runs in 33 overs leading up to tea.

The pair surpassed the previous record held by Fred Holland and Walter Lees, who achieved 145 runs back in 1906 at The Oval, before Lawes was dismissed for 83. In pursuit of a century, he found himself within striking distance but fell to Dan Mousley at deep square leg when he pulled a short delivery from Nathan Gilchrist.

Century Celebration

Foakes found further support in Sean Abbott (40), as the duo added 108 runs in 23 overs with a brisk scoring rate against the new ball.

Foakes achieved his 13th first-class century off 176 balls, a distinguished innings crafted under challenging circumstances that bolstered his team's position.

Abbott provided a highlight with an impressive six off Woakes, launching the ball towards a building site where a hotel is currently under construction. However, in a dramatic conclusion to an engaging day, the last three wickets fell within the final two overs.

Debutant Jordan Thompson for Warwickshire claimed Abbott caught behind and later added the lbw of Matt Fisher. The day concluded with Gilchrist managing to bowl Foakes, concluding a tumultuous yet thrilling day of cricket.
