Spanish Cyclist Jaume Guardeno in ICU After Serious Training Crash
Spanish cyclist Jaume Guardeno is currently receiving intensive care at a hospital following a serious training accident, as reported by his team, Caja Rural-RGA.
In a statement released on Thursday, the team noted that "Guardeno suffered a fall last Tuesday while training after his participation in the Tour of Catalonia, which resulted in a collision with a vehicle, leading to serious injury."
He was airlifted via helicopter to Hospital Tauli in Sabadell, where he is being closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit for critical injuries.
Reports from Spanish media indicate that Guardeno sustained a head injury after losing control of his bicycle when he rode over a stone, resulting in a collision with a car.
The talented 23-year-old recently finished 29th in the Tour of Catalonia and secured 14th place in last year's Vuelta a Espana Grand Tour.
Caja Rural-RGA expressed their support, stating, "We want to express all our support and strength to Jaume and his family during this time, wishing him a speedy and full recovery."
Carapaz Undergoes Perineal Surgery
In related news, former Olympic champion Richard Carapaz has successfully undergone surgery for a perineal condition, just one month before the Giro d’Italia. Despite the setback, the Ecuadorean cyclist aims to be fit and ready to compete for a fourth podium finish in the prestigious race.
“It wasn’t part of the plan, but it was handled in the best possible way,” the 32-year-old shared on Instagram on Wednesday.
Carapaz, who won gold in the road race at the Tokyo Olympics, missed the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana last year due to illness. "From today, I’m fully focused on my recovery and on getting back to peak condition ahead of the Giro," he stated.
