Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor voiced her discontent regarding the officiating following Arsenal's Katie McCabe's hair-pulling incident involving Alyssa Thompson during the Champions League quarter-final, which resulted in Chelsea's exit from the tournament.
As the Blues sought a last-minute equalizer after a stoppage-time goal narrowed the aggregate score to 3-2, McCabe reached out and pulled Thompson's hair while she was advancing forward. Despite the clear infringement, McCabe was neither awarded a yellow card nor did the video assistant referee (VAR) recommend that referee Frida Mia Klarlund reconsider the situation.
Bompastor received a yellow card for her vehement protest against the officiating decision, which was escalated to a red card due to her ongoing objections, although she remained on the touchline while Arsenal managed to secure their place in the semi-finals.
In a passionate interview with BBC Two, Bompastor came prepared with her phone to show a replay of the incident. "For me, it is clearly a red card for the Arsenal player. She's pulling Alyssa Thompson's hair," she asserted. "If the VAR is not able to check that situation, I don't know why we have VAR. I'm receiving a red card when I believe it should be the Arsenal player receiving it."
Former England captain Steph Houghton commented on the incident, stating, "It doesn't look great, does it? Chelsea had just scored; Thompson was driving with the ball. It is really, really cynical and does not look great."
Bompastor revealed that Thompson was "crying and emotional" after the match, emphasizing that hair pulling is unacceptable behavior on the football field. Following the altercation, McCabe appeared to express remorse to Thompson. Arsenal manager Renee Slegers remarked, "I didn't see the incident on the pitch when it was happening but I did see Katie going to Alyssa to apologize. My assumption is it's not intentional, but it is of course unfortunate."
Brighton midfielder Fran Kirby added, "It's surprising that they haven't reviewed that on VAR. I don't think McCabe intended to grab Thompson's hair; I believe she was attempting to grab her shirt."
Bompastor had previously criticized the officiating following the first leg at Emirates Stadium, emphasizing the need for "more respect" in the women's game after her team had two goals disallowed.
"Tonight, we are talking too much about refereeing, as we did last week," Bompastor noted. "However, it is crucial for everyone to understand that such decisions can be the difference between qualification and elimination. This has a significant impact on the players. I am immensely proud of my players; they gave their all, and they do not deserve that level of officiating."
