Ilia Malinin Wins Third Straight World Figure Skating Title

PRAGUE -- Ilia Malinin has once again ascended to the pinnacle of figure skating.

Following a disappointing performance at the Olympics that saw the top gold-medal contender fail to secure a podium finish, the so-called "Quad God" dazzled the audience with a series of powerful jumps, including a backflip that added flair to his routine, successfully defending his world championship title for a third consecutive year.

In a moment of palpable relief, Malinin celebrated with shouts and fist pumps upon completing his performance, demonstrating that he has successfully moved past the challenges faced during the Olympic Games—a period plagued by self-reflection and regret over previous mistakes.

Expressing his gratitude, he acknowledged the support of the audience: "It was really challenging, really hard but with you guys I was able to make it through." He noted that his primary goal during the skate was to simply complete the free program "in one piece."

Taking to the ice last after leading in the short program—similar to his strategy in Milan—Malinin executed five impressive quadruple jumps but did not attempt the innovative quad axel, a jump he chose to forgo during the Olympic competition.

With a free skate score of 218.11 and a combined total of 329.40 points, he finished significantly ahead of Japan's Yuma Kagiyama, who secured the silver medal with a score of 306.67. Shun Sato, another Japanese competitor, claimed the bronze with a total of 288.54. Despite achieving a personal-best free skate score, Kagiyama had to settle for second place, showcasing the high level of competition present at this year's championship.
