McLaren Surprises with Fastest Time in Japanese Grand Prix Practice

In a notable turn of events, Mercedes driver George Russell acknowledged McLaren's impressive performance as Oscar Piastri clocked the fastest lap during Friday's practice session at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. Piastri's time was 0.092 seconds quicker than that of his competitor Kimi Antonelli, Russell's teammate who recently secured his first grand prix victory in China.

Currently leading the championship race, Russell finished the session in third place, 0.205 seconds behind Piastri. He expressed his surprise at McLaren's pace, remarking, "A little bit of a surprise, to be honest. Still some improvements to do so a bit of work to do tonight."

Lando Norris, the other driver for McLaren, managed to secure fourth position despite facing challenges from a hydraulic leak that impacted his session. Russell noted difficulties with energy management, which affected his performance in specific track sections, notably at the Spoon corner.

Concerns About Energy Management

Russell further elaborated on issues regarding the new hybrid engines and their potential impact on the challenges presented by Suzuka. He mentioned, "We are a bit down on speed into the first corner, but the Esses is still super-fast. The speed we get up to halfway down the back straight is the fastest we’ve ever done."

In contrast, Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who ended the practice session in 10th place due to difficulties with his car's balance and grip, disagreed with Russell's views. He insisted that the energy recovery systems had indeed complicated the track's dynamics. Verstappen described the inconsistent handling of his car, stating, "I had two opposites of balance today, and we never got it together."

Mercedes vs. McLaren

Even with McLaren's notable lap times, Mercedes maintained confidence in their race simulations, as Antonelli demonstrated strong performance with impressive late-session runs. Meanwhile, both Ferrari drivers encountered issues with grip; Charles Leclerc struggled particularly through the Esses, while Lewis Hamilton voiced his lack of confidence in his vehicle.

Norris reflected on a challenging start to the race weekend, suggesting that his initial aerodynamic assessments had not adequately prepared him: "I just lacked a lot of laps. Around a track like this, you want laps under your belt to give yourself confidence."

To conclude the session, Fernando Alonso made his much-anticipated debut at Suzuka this season, finishing in 19th place. Additionally, Honda's F1 chief, Koji Watanabe, expressed optimism regarding performance improvements at their home race, acknowledging previous reliability challenges.
