Harry Wilson Steps Up as Wales' New Star After Bale's Retirement
While it is impossible to truly replace Gareth Bale, a figure widely regarded as Wales' greatest player, Harry Wilson is rising to meet the challenge.
The impact of Bale's departure is considerable. With more international goals and appearances than any other Welsh footballer, the former Real Madrid star transformed the national team in numerous ways.
Wales has approached the transition since Bale's retirement as a communal endeavor. However, Wilson's contributions have been particularly noteworthy. Post-Bale, he has netted more goals than any of his teammates, with 12 out of his 17 career international goals coming during this period. Many of these goals have been remarkable, showcasing long-range efforts that are reminiscent of Bale's most memorable strikes.
Predominantly, Wilson has showcased his talent using his left foot, which possesses a flair akin to that of Bale. Moreover, some have even noted a slight physical resemblance between the two.
In critical moments where Wales once depended on Bale, the focus is now shifting to Wilson. The team, guided by Craig Bellamy, is set to face Bosnia-Herzegovina in a World Cup play-off semi-final in Cardiff. A victory would lead them to a final encounter against either Italy or Northern Ireland the following Tuesday.
During the 2022 World Cup qualifying play-offs, Bale scored all three goals that secured their place in the tournament. Can Wilson replicate this success?
"We can't replace Bale," he stated to BBC Sport Wales. "He was our best ever player. He carried us through games, he got us to major tournaments, and his performances in those tournaments were incredible.
"I never viewed it as 'I have to replace Bale.' I understand that, along with my fellow attacking players, we have significant responsibilities and a void to fill collectively.
"I'm genuinely pleased with my performance and contributions since Gaz departed. But it's important to clarify that I am not replacing him, which is simply impossible."

Given the heights Bale achieved at both club and national levels, comparisons are approached with caution. Bale's career trajectory was characterized by a continuous ascent, whereas Wilson's path has involved a more gradual progress towards becoming one of the standout performers in this Premier League season.
Both players began their international careers at a young age, with Wilson becoming Wales' youngest ever international at just 16. However, he faced challenges transitioning from a promising academy talent to a regular first-team player at Liverpool. Multiple loan spells allowed him to gain experience, but it was at Fulham where he truly found his footing. Even there, his initial seasons included a significant number of appearances from the bench, despite being essential to the team's promotion to the Premier League.
This situation seems unthinkable now, as he has recorded 10 goals and 6 assists this season, garnering attention from other clubs amid speculation about his future as his Fulham contract nears its end this summer.
"There will be other clubs looking at him because everything good about Fulham comes through Harry Wilson," remarked Match of the Day pundit Wayne Rooney after Wilson's recent goal against Burnley. "His goals, his assists, his vision—his overall performance has been excellent.
"He's been remarkable this season, but it raises the question of why this form is emerging now. Why hasn't he demonstrated this level of consistency throughout his career?"
Reasons may stem from injuries or the limited opportunities he faced, particularly before last season when he seldom started more than three consecutive Premier League matches. Alternatively, his recent burst of form might be attributed to a combination of factors, including newfound confidence.
"Sometimes, it just clicks for a player," explains Wales head coach Craig Bellamy.
"As one matures, both as a footballer and an individual, wisdom and smarter decisions come into play. His footballing intelligence has undoubtedly advanced. His positioning and comprehension of the game have reached an entirely new tier."
Wilson's teammate, Ethan Ampadu, also shares insights: "I'm not certain why it has taken others so long to recognize his abilities, as he has consistently excelled. For us, it is no surprise; everyone has always acknowledged his talents, and this year, it's gratifying to see a broader audience finally appreciate him, especially given the brilliance of his left foot."
This season, Wilson has increasingly showcased this talent, producing spectacular moments on the pitch. His highlight reel includes a December goal of the month award for an exceptional strike using the outside of his boot against Crystal Palace. Statistics further illustrate his prowess, as only Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo has outperformed his expected goals (xG) to such a degree, indicating his ability to score from improbable situations.
Returning to comparisons with Bale, former Wales captain Barry Horne articulates: "Rather than directly likening him to a recent star, let us recognize that he currently embodies Wales’ creative heartbeat. Be it through free-kicks or open play, he is the one we will rely on to generate opportunities."
This sentiment is echoed by his teammates.
"In achieving our aspirations, the focus must be on our collective efforts—players, staff, and fans," Ampadu asserts.
"However, when you have a player capable of conjuring moments of magic from seemingly nothing, it significantly boosts confidence."
