Ben White Must Clear the Air with England Team-Mates, Says Tuchel
Thomas Tuchel has stated that Ben White needs to "clear the air" with his England team-mates following his return to the national squad for the first time in four years.
The Arsenal defender’s last appearance for the national team was in March 2022. He was subsequently called up for the Qatar World Cup later that year but departed the camp citing "personal reasons" after a disagreement with then-assistant manager Steve Holland.
At the age of 28, White made himself "unavailable for selection" for the remainder of Gareth Southgate’s management, which concluded after the Euros in July 2024.
"I believe everyone deserves a second chance," Tuchel remarked when questioned about why White had been selected again. "I am not fully aware of the specifics of the situation. However, I wanted to initiate a fresh start."
"Once I inquired if Ben was ready to play for me and for England, he immediately expressed his willingness and eagerness to return. I believe it is essential for him to mend relationships with his team-mates, and I am confident he will do so once the players who competed in the World Cup return."
England is set to face Uruguay and Japan in friendly matches at Wembley during this international break before Tuchel finalizes his squad for the upcoming World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada this summer.
Tuchel noted that White, capable of playing both right-back and centre-back, did not hesitate when presented with the opportunity to be recalled. "When the opportunity arose due to Jarrell Quansah's injury late in the process, his response was immediate, enthusiastic, and very positive. He showed a high level of emotion, indicating that he genuinely cares," he elaborated.
The German manager has announced a 35-man squad for the matches against Uruguay on Friday (19:45 GMT) and Japan on Tuesday (19:45 GMT). Eleven players, including captain Harry Kane and Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, will join the squad on Saturday morning after some time off for rest.
Alexander-Arnold 'Just Has to Accept' Omission
In addition to recalling White, Tuchel made another significant decision by once again omitting Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has not been selected since June of the previous year.
"It’s merely a decision," stated Tuchel. "A sporting decision. This can be a difficult and potentially unfair choice, but we must make these kinds of decisions."
Despite White starting only 15 times for Arsenal this season, his contributions during the team's run to the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City and in the Champions League's last 16 were sufficient to earn him a spot in the squad.
"It was a chance for me to meet him in person," added Tuchel.
"I am aware of what Trent can offer us, so the decision was made to include Ben and Tino Livramento, as we wanted to stick with players who had successful camps with us in September, November, and December. They also need the playing time, and there is significant competition for this position, including Djed Spence, who is also vying for a chance."
"I recognize that leaving a player like Trent out generates discussion. We had a conversation, and I attempted to clarify the situation. He simply has to accept it."
'Pressure is on Palmer'
Tuchel also cautioned Chelsea's Cole Palmer that a spot in the Three Lions squad for the World Cup is not guaranteed.
The 23-year-old has returned to the England squad for the first time since the previous summer, having missed several camps in September, October, and November due to a groin injury.
With Palmer having secured only three caps since scoring the equalizer in the Euro 2024 final, players such as Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Phil Foden have also bolstered their claims for the number 10 position.
"We have more evidence of his performance without him than with him, so the pressure is certainly on him," Tuchel noted. "He has experienced a difficult season, as well as challenges with the national team. He has been available only once for us, and during that time, we opted to maintain the same squad, resulting in healthy competition for his preferred number 10 spot."
"He is in good spirits, open to communication, and demonstrating his qualities. He is highly engaged with the group, which are critical steps for showing performance and building connections within the team. He will receive his opportunities in the upcoming matches. We have completed four training sessions, and it is crucial for him to demonstrate his abilities. He cannot hold back. He must understand that he is competing for his place, and nothing will be handed to anyone on a silver platter."
