Wales and Liverpool legend John Toshack diagnosed with dementia

Football legend John Toshack has been diagnosed with dementia, according to confirmation from his son, Cameron Toshack.

The 77-year-old former striker, who earned 13 goals across 40 international caps for Wales, also served as manager of the national team on two separate occasions—briefly in 1994 and again from 2004 to 2010.

Following his distinguished playing career at Liverpool, Toshack established himself as a respected manager across Europe, leading several prominent clubs including Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Besiktas throughout his coaching tenure.

Cameron Toshack, a former assistant coach at Leeds United who currently works in Thailand's football scene, revealed that his father experiences fluctuating symptoms typical of the condition.

"It's a devastating illness," Cameron told the Daily Mail, describing the impact on his father's daily life.

"The primary challenge lies with his short-term memory retention. While we maintain regular contact—sometimes speaking multiple times daily—he may not recall our morning conversation by the afternoon."

However, Cameron emphasized that his father's long-term memory regarding his professional career remains remarkably intact.

"When discussing his Liverpool years, or his time at Sociedad or Madrid, the precision of his recollections is extraordinary," Cameron explained.

"Recently, he provided detailed analysis of a Real Madrid match against Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan, including the specific tactical adjustments he implemented to counter Marco van Basten's threat. His recall was so vivid, the match could have occurred yesterday."

The diagnosis comes after Toshack faced serious health challenges in recent years, including a two-week period requiring ventilator support in a Barcelona hospital following complications from COVID-19 and pneumonia.

Reflecting on that experience in November 2022, Toshack acknowledged the severity of his condition, stating: "When I reflect on that period now, it's genuinely frightening."

Despite his current diagnosis, Cameron reports that his father continues to offer valuable professional insights.

"During our discussions about my work in Thailand, he consistently provides excellent guidance," Cameron noted.

"His tactical acumen—that ability to anticipate developments two or three moves in advance—remains sharp. That strategic thinking has always been part of my own coaching DNA."

Distinguished Career Overview

John Toshack launched his professional career with hometown club Cardiff City before securing a transfer to Liverpool in 1970.

At Anfield, he developed a prolific striking partnership with Kevin Keegan, contributing to an exceptional trophy collection during his eight-year tenure: three First Division titles, two UEFA Cups, one FA Cup, one European Cup, plus a Charity Shield and UEFA Super Cup.

In 1978, Toshack transitioned to Swansea City in a player-manager capacity, orchestrating one of football's most remarkable transformation stories by guiding the club through consecutive promotions from the Fourth Division to the First Division, while securing three Welsh Cup victories.

His managerial expertise extended across eight different countries, achieving silverware in five of those nations. Notably, he completed two separate tenures with Real Madrid, with his final coaching appointment coming at Tractor in Azerbaijan in 2018.

During his second management period with Wales, Toshack played a crucial role in nurturing the development of future stars including Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, and Joe Allen, helping establish the foundation for their subsequent international success.
