Asian Champions League quarterfinal sends Iran's Tractor FC to Saudi Arabia

Iranian football club Tractor FC is scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia for a crucial playoff match against Shabab Al-Ahli of Dubai, with the winner earning a coveted spot in the Asian Champions League Elite quarterfinals to face Thailand's Buriram United.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) conducted its official draw on Wednesday to determine the tournament's quarterfinal matchups, following Tuesday's announcement that the previously postponed western zone playoffs have been rescheduled for April 13-14 in Jeddah. The postponement was necessitated by ongoing regional conflicts in the Middle East.

Jeddah will serve as the central hub for the tournament's most critical phases, hosting the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final from April 16-25. Tournament organizers have established these dates while maintaining hope for regional stability.

"We all want to play matches as soon as possible. So, hopefully we're able to finish fixtures in April as we have planned," stated AFC General Secretary Windsor John. "We're hoping that things will calm down very soon."

John emphasized that participating clubs have demonstrated strong support for the confederation's cautious approach, being "quite supportive of the measures we've put in place to ensure that we only play when things have calmed down."

Tournament Draw Results

The Wednesday draw produced several compelling matchups across both zones. Japan's Vissel Kobe, runners-up in the eastern zone, will face the victor of the high-profile playoff between four-time champions Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Al-Sadd of the United Arab Emirates.

Defending champions Al-Ahli Saudi have been paired against Al-Duhail of Qatar, with the winner advancing to face Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim in the quarterfinals.

Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad will compete against Al-Wahda for the opportunity to meet Japan's Machida Zelvia, the eastern zone's top-performing team during the league stage.

Additional Tournament Impact

The regional conflict's impact extends beyond the elite competition. The AFC Champions League Two and AFC Challenge League quarterfinals have also been postponed due to the ongoing situation. The AFC confirmed on Tuesday that these matches will take place on April 19 and 22 at centralized venues, which are yet to be announced.

Among the affected teams is Al-Nassr, featuring global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, which competes in the Asian Champions League Two competition.
