Escalating Violence in Israel-Palestine Conflict Claims 18 Lives
The past week has seen a distressing escalation of violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, resulting in at least 18 fatalities in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. The majority of these casualties were attributed to Israeli air strikes in Gaza, despite ongoing efforts by the US-appointed Board of Peace to establish a framework aimed at disarming Hamas.
Rising Tensions
A combination of violent actions involving settler and military shootings accounted for three deaths in the West Bank. Notably, these settler attacks have intensified alongside the ongoing joint efforts by the US and Israel to counteract Iran, suggesting that the Israeli military may have been facilitating this violence.
This surge in violence coincides with Israel's restrictions on worship at Palestinian holy sites, purportedly due to fears of Iranian attacks. Since late February, Muslim worshippers have been barred from accessing the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, with the state of emergency now extended until mid-April.
In a significant event, Israeli forces prevented Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to conduct Palm Sunday mass for the first time in centuries, prompting international criticism. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assured that church leaders will be permitted to worship in the upcoming days.
Surge in Strikes on Gaza
The recent week witnessed a notable increase in Israeli air strikes and artillery fire directed at police forces in Gaza. Israeli officials assert that these military operations aim to diminish Hamas’s control, although they caution that such actions may inadvertently create vacuums in civilian services. Nickolay Mladenov from the Board of Peace has introduced a proposed framework for disarming Hamas, which envisions establishing “one authority, one law, and one weapon” over an eight-month period; however, prospects for progressing to the second phase of reconstruction remain bleak.
Continuing Israeli strikes have inflicted severe casualties, including:
- A drone strike on March 25 in central Gaza’s Nuseirat camp, resulting in two Palestinian deaths.
- Attacks on police checkpoints on March 28 that resulted in the deaths of six individuals.
- Another strike on the same day that claimed an additional three lives.
- A March 30 assault in Gaza City, leading to two further deaths.
Since the onset of the October “ceasefire,” reported fatalities among Palestinians in Gaza have reached at least 705.
Deteriorating Conditions
As humanitarian aid remains severely restricted and adverse weather conditions persist, the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. The Ministry of Health has raised alarms regarding a critical shortage of fuel and components for hospital generators, jeopardizing medical services. Tragically, an infant named Alma Abu Rida succumbed to acute pneumonia while waiting for evacuation from Gaza last week.
Continued Attacks in the West Bank
Violent incidents targeting Palestinians in the West Bank persist, contributing to at least five additional deaths over the past week. Significant occurrences include:
- The killing of Yusri Abu Qbeita, 31, by Israeli forces and settlers in Masafer Yatta on March 25.
- The shooting of Mohammed al-Malahi by settlers in Bethlehem during efforts to rebuild an illegal outpost.
- The fatal shooting of Mustafa Hamed, 22, by Israeli forces at the entrance to the Qalandiya refugee camp.
- The death of Sufian Abu Layl, 46, during an Israeli raid in Qalandiya, alongside the shooting of 15-year-old Adham Dahman in Dheisheh refugee camp.
Further reports indicate ongoing violence, as settlers engage in assaults against shepherds, farmers, and villagers throughout the occupied West Bank, underscoring the persistent cycle of violence in the region.
