New trial to test effect of GLP-1s on social outcomes
A groundbreaking GLP-1 trial is set to launch in Pittsburgh, aimed not only at assessing the effectiveness of the drug in treating addiction but also at evaluating its potential to decrease recidivism and improve various social outcomes, including employment, health, and housing stability.
This initiative is being organized by the Center for Addiction Science, Policy and Research (CASPR), a non-profit entity, in collaboration with the Allegheny County Department of Human Services. The trial is slated to commence in early 2027, with plans to enroll up to 1,200 adults who are diagnosed with alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, or both, and who are identified as being at high risk for criminal-justice involvement. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, as detailed in a press release distributed yesterday.
