Two bald eagle chicks successfully hatched over Easter weekend in California's San Bernardino National Forest, captivating thousands of online viewers who witnessed the remarkable event through a live webcam positioned 145 feet up a pine tree.
The eaglets are the offspring of Jackie and Shadow, a mated pair that has gained international recognition through their continuously broadcasting nest cam, which has documented their lives since 2018. This livestream has become one of the most-watched wildlife cameras of its kind on YouTube.
"The emotions are overwhelming – relief, joy, and plenty of happy tears," explained Jenny Voisard, media manager for Friends of Big Bear Valley, the environmental education nonprofit organization that operates the livestream. "This season has been an emotional rollercoaster for both Jackie and Shadow and their dedicated viewers."
The successful hatching comes after a challenging start to the breeding season. Earlier this year, the eagle pair suffered a devastating loss when ravens invaded their nest and destroyed two eggs, deeply affecting both the birds and their online community. While Jackie typically lays her eggs in January, she managed to produce a replacement clutch following the raid.
The first chick emerged Saturday evening around 9:30 PM, followed by its sibling on Easter Sunday at approximately 8:30 AM. The timing created a particularly meaningful celebration for the international audience that has followed the pair's journey.

The eagle family's devoted following has mobilized to protect their habitat. Supporters have raised $1.6 million in less than a month, primarily through small individual donations, working toward a $10 million goal to purchase nearby land threatened by proposed development. The deadline for securing permanent conservation protection is the end of July.
Currently, Jackie and Shadow are focused entirely on nurturing their new offspring. Monday morning's livestream footage showed both parents actively feeding the fuzzy gray chicks, their tiny heads bobbing eagerly during meals.
The coming weeks will be critical for chick survival, with parents working continuously to maintain adequate food supplies and protect their young from weather extremes and potential threats. The nest functions as both nursery and food storage facility during this intensive period.
Bald eagle development occurs rapidly, with fledgling typically taking place between 10 to 14 weeks after hatching. During this accelerated growth phase, the chicks undergo dramatic daily transformations.
"The visible changes from evening to morning are remarkable," Voisard observed. "Each day represents significant development for these eaglets, making this an extraordinary time for observation and appreciation."
The successful hatching represents not only a victory for Jackie and Shadow but also highlights the broader conservation success story of bald eagles, which have recovered from near-extinction to become a symbol of wildlife preservation efforts across North America.
