Humana is undergoing a significant transition in its CenterWell Senior Primary Care clinics by replacing its private equity sponsor. The change marks the exit of Welsh Carson, Anderson & Stowe and the entrance of BlackRock.
On Tuesday, the health insurance giant announced that BlackRock would acquire Welsh Carson's majority stake in its network of 150 clinics, which are focused on Medicare Advantage beneficiaries, in a deal valued at $2.8 billion. Humana indicated that, over the next two years, this transaction will facilitate funding for existing clinic operations, enable the establishment of new clinics, and allow for other strategic acquisitions.
Welsh Carson's initial investment in CenterWell occurred more than six years ago, making this move a predictable conclusion for a private equity firm. Since 2020, Welsh Carson has invested at least $1.8 billion into this venture.
